@@@@@I really do not expect most people to agree
@@@@@I really do not expect most people to agree with it because a nice home is an emotional thing And when it comes to money, high emotions tend to lower financial intelligence 1 know from personal experience that money has a way of making every decision emotionalWhen it comes to houses, I point out that most people work all their lives paying for a home they never own In other words, most people buy a new house every so many years, each time incurring a new 30-year loan to pay off the previous oneEven though people receive a tax deduction for interest on mortgage payments, they pay for all their other expenses with after-tax dollarsEven after they pay off their mortgageMy wife's parents were shocked when the property taxes on their home went to $1,000 a monthThis was after they had retired, so the increase put a strain on their retirement budget, and they felt forced to move
4 Houses do not always go up in value In 1997, I still have friends who owe a million dollars for a home that will today sell for only $700,000The greatest losses of all are those from missed opportunities If all your money is tied up in your house, you may be forced to work harder because your money continues blowing out of the expense column, instead of adding to the asset column, the classic middle class cash flow patternIf a young couple would put more money into their asset column early on, their later years would get easier, especially as they prepared to send their children to collegeTheir assets would have grown and would be available to help cover expensesAll too often, a house only serves as a vehicle for incurring a home-equity loan to pay for mounting expensesIn summary, the end result in making a decision to own a house that is too expensive in lieu of starting an investment portfolio early on impacts an individual in at least the following three ways:

1Loss of time, during which other assets could have grown in valueLoss of additional capital, which could have been invested instead of paying for high-maintenance expenses related directly to the homeToo often, people count their house, savings and retirement plan as all they have in their asset columnBecause they have no money to invest, they simply do not investThis costs them investment experience Most never become what the investment world calls a "sophisticated investor And the best investments are usually first sold to "sophisticated investors," who then turn around and sell them to the people playing it safeI am not saying don't buy a hous

Today, I often meet people who are too busy to take care of their wealthAnd there are people too busy to take care of their healthThe cause is the sameThey're busy, and they stay busy as a way of avoiding something they do not want to faceNobody has to tell themIn fact, if you remind them, they often respond with anger or irritation
If they aren't busy at work or with the kids, they're often busy watching TV, fishing, playing golf or shoppingYet, deep down they know they are avoiding something important That's the most common form of lazinessLaziness by staying busy
So what is the cure for laziness? The answer is a little greed
For many of us, we were raised thinking of greed or desire as bad"Greedy people are bad people," my mom use to sayYet, we all have inside of us this yearning to have nice things, new things or exciting thingsSo to keep that emotion of desire under control, often parents found ways of suppressing that desire with guilt

“Here you go, Wanda,” Jamie said, ducking out of the groupHe had his hands full of the bars,
and water bottles tucked under his armsHaving fun?”
    “Yeah! Wish you could play
    “Next time,” I said
“Here you go…” Ian was there, his hands full of granola bars
    “Beat ya,” Jamie told him
“Oh,” Jared said, appearing on Jamie's other sideHe also had too many bars for one
Ian and Jared exchanged a long glance
“Where's all the food?” Kyle demandedHe stood over an empty box, his head swiveling
around the room, looking for the culprit
“Catch,” Jared said, tossing granola bars one by one, hard, like knives
Kyle plucked them out of the air with ease, then jogged over to see if Jared was holding out on
    him
“Here,” Ian said, shoving half of his haul toward his brother without looking at himFor the first time today, he looked at me, staring down at me where I satHis

I recoiled, and caught my breath when my ribs protested
Jared and Ian closed ranks in front of me like stage curtains

Hearn stared at DoveLieutenant (sg) Dove, USNRA Cornell man, a Deke, a perfect ass-holeHe was six feet two and weighed about a hundred and sixty pounds, with straight ash-blond hair cut close, and a clean pleasant vacuous faceHe looked more like a Harvard clubman, varsity crew
Conn fingered the red bulb of his nose, and said in his husky assured voice, "That's right, many's the good time I've had in WashingtonBrigadier General Caldwell and Major General Simmons -- do you know them? -- old friends of mineAnd there was that Navy feller, Rear Admiral Tannache, got to be good friends with him tooDamn fine man, he was a good officer Conn surveyed his paunch, which projected in sharp curved lines just beneath his shorts, like a football inflated inside him"We've had some wild times between usThat Caldwell is hell on wheels when it comes to womenWe've had some times between us would singe your back hair
"Oh, we had lots of that too," Dove inserted eagerly"I couldn't go back to Washington with Jane, because there're so many girls there, if I should meet one of them with her, well, it wouldn't be so goodJane's a hell of a swell kid, wonderful wife, but you know she takes her church seriously, and she'd be awfully upset
Lieutenant (sg) DoveHe had been assigned to the division as an interpreter at almost the same time Hearn had come in, and with amazing, with startling na?veté he had announced very carefully to everyone that his rank was equivalent to captain in the Army, and that the responsibilities of a lieutenant sg were greater than those of a major or a lieutenant colonel in the ArmyHe had told the officers this in officers' mess on Motome and had been loved accordinglyConn had not spoken to him for a weekBut to the impedimenta that kept true love apart, or the poem went something like thatIn any case, they were delighted with each other nowHearn remembered Dove's saying to him once when he first came to the division, "You know, really, Hearn, you can appreciate this because you're an educated man like me, but do you know there's sort of a coarser element in the officers in the ArmyThe Navy's more careful
